Boston Sights, Sounds and Hotels
The African Meeting House and the Abiel Smith School on Beacon Hill in Boston were both built in the 1800’s by free African-American’s and were funded by Abiel Smith, a white businessman who left an endowment of $2000 to be used to educate black children. The two buildings that were situated in Boston in the centre of the 19th century African-American community bear witness to the excellent black craftsmanship. The African Meeting House was restored in 1987 and today looks as it did in the 1850’s. The Abiel Smith School renovations were completed in 2000 and the building today houses a gallery, classroom and museum store.
