Dublin’s 700 hectares of lush natural greenery given over to outdoor facilities and recreation areas also sports a zoo, lakes and gardens and the four-storey tower house, Ashtown Castle, which was built in the 17th century. Phoenix Park has played a significant role in the history of Dublin, with the murder in 1882 of Lord Cavendish, the British Chief Secretary for Ireland by the Irish nationalist group known as the ‘Invincibles’, and being home to the Aras un Uachtarain, the official residence of the Irish President.
