The Strossmayer Gallery of Old Masters was opened on 9 November 1884 after the Bishop of Dakovo, Josip Juraj Strossmayer, donated his collection of 256 works of art to the Croatian people in 1868, handing it over to the academy. During subsequent years, the museum's collection has grown to over 4000 items, enriched by new acquisitions and donations from a broad array of philanthropists. Only around 300 are displayed at any one time due to space constraints.
